Google says Gemini users can now generate, preview and edit files in chat, with PDF support on web and mobile and broader formats on the web.
Google says the Gemini app can now generate, preview and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, code and other files directly inside chat, extending the product’s file-handling tools across web and mobile in a rollout that is available to all users in all languages where Gemini is offered.
What Google announced
In a post published on 29 October 2026, Google said users can expand files to full screen to type edits directly, highlight text to ask questions, or ask Gemini to refine files. The company said PDF preview and editing are supported on both the web and mobile, while other formats including Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code are supported on the web only.
How the feature works
Google said the updated workflow lets users create files from prompts and then continue editing them in the same chat thread. In one example described by the company, Gemini can turn uploaded handwritten lecture notes into a PDF study guide, after which users can manually edit the document, highlight sections for text or visual changes, and ask follow-up questions.
Context within Gemini’s product rollout
The announcement follows a series of Gemini updates from Google in 2024, including the launch of Deep Research for Gemini Advanced and the availability of Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental on the web on 11 December 2024. Google also launched a standalone Gemini app for iPhone on 14 November 2024. The company said the new file-editing capabilities are available broadly, but platform support still varies by file type.
