Tether Unveils Open-Source AI Translation Models for Africa, Europe

Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, has announced the release of open-source AI translation models designed to operate offline on everyday devices. Dubbed TranslatePsy-AfriSLM, TranslatePsy-AfriNano, and TranslatePsy-EuroNano, these models aim to expand access to education, healthcare, and critical information for underserved communities across Africa and parts of Europe.

TranslatePsy-AfriSLM supports 19 African languages, including Swahili, Hausa, and Zulu, covering regions that represent nearly half of Africa’s population. Meanwhile, TranslatePsy-EuroNano supports nine European languages, optimized for multilingual translation with minimal storage requirements. The models run directly on smartphones and laptops without relying on internet connectivity, ensuring data privacy and accessibility in areas where reliable networks are scarce.

Unlike many existing AI translation systems, which require significant cloud infrastructure, Tether’s models are designed to function locally, using just a fraction of the hardware and storage resources of comparable systems. For instance, the smallest TranslatePsy-AfriSLM model outperformed larger frameworks like Meta’s NLLB-3.3B on benchmarks such as FLORES-200, despite utilizing only 800 million parameters.

Unlocking Local-Language Potential

The implications of these tools are significant. In Sub-Saharan Africa, language barriers and connectivity challenges have long limited access to education, healthcare, and technical resources. TranslatePsy-AfriSLM could enable local-language delivery of courses, medical knowledge, and AI-powered learning tools, empowering communities that have historically been excluded from such advancements. Healthcare applications are particularly promising, especially for disseminating accurate medical information in regions with limited doctor-patient communication due to linguistic diversity.

Tether’s existing network of solar-powered kiosks across Africa, which currently provide phone charging and financial services, could double as hubs for accessing localized AI-driven content.

The European counterpart, TranslatePsy-EuroNano, supports 90 translation directions across nine languages while requiring just 36MB of storage—94% less than comparable offline solutions. Using English as a pivot language, it delivers high-quality translations with minimal computational overhead, making it a cost-effective alternative for multilingual communication needs in Europe.

Strategic Context

Tether’s move into open-source AI aligns with its strategy to decentralize digital tools and reduce reliance on centralized infrastructure. Since 2024, the company has been building its AI capabilities through its Tether Data division, focusing on user-operated models and peer-to-peer systems. The TranslatePsy series builds on Tether’s 2025 launch of QVAC, a development platform for localized AI applications. CEO Paolo Ardoino has emphasized the importance of bridging the digital divide, stating, “Language should not determine who can benefit from artificial intelligence.”
