Paul Christiano Joins OpenAI Foundation Board, Focuses on AI Safety

Paul Christiano, a prominent figure in AI alignment and safety, has joined the OpenAI Foundation Board and its Safety and Security Committee (SSC). OpenAI announced the move on September 8, 2026, marking a significant step in the nonprofit’s efforts to strengthen governance as artificial intelligence systems grow increasingly powerful and complex.

Christiano’s portfolio includes a long history of leadership in AI safety. He is the founder of the Alignment Research Center (ARC), a nonprofit focused on aligning advanced AI systems with human values. Notably, he led OpenAI’s alignment research between 2017 and 2021, pioneering reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), a method that underpins many of today’s AI safety protocols.

At OpenAI, he’ll work alongside Zico Kolter, chair of the SSC, to oversee safety and security governance across OpenAI’s operations, including its public benefit corporation. Bret Taylor, Chair of the OpenAI Foundation Board, emphasized the importance of Christiano’s technical judgment, stating, “Paul has helped define the field of AI alignment through rigorous work focused on the hardest challenges posed by frontier AI systems. His expertise will strengthen the Board’s oversight as OpenAI continues to develop transformative AI technologies.”

Beyond his nonprofit work, Christiano brings substantial government experience. He served as a senior technical advisor at the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). There, he contributed to national security evaluations of advanced AI models and developed strategies to mitigate associated risks. His dual perspectives from public and private sectors position him as a key player in bridging safety research with actionable governance.

OpenAI’s accelerated advancements in artificial intelligence, alongside industry turbulence over safety commitments, make Christiano’s appointment particularly timely. In recent months, several AI companies have scaled back their safety pledges, even as systems become more capable. Christiano’s expertise in evaluating potential catastrophic risks could provide the foundation with the critical oversight it needs during this period of rapid development.

“AI capabilities have advanced very rapidly in the last year, and alignment remains a difficult technical problem,” Christiano said in a statement. “The Safety and Security Committee’s responsibility is more important and challenging than ever. I’m excited to join the team to help address these challenges.”

The appointment also reflects OpenAI’s broader strategy to ensure responsible AI governance. In October 2025, the organization underwent a recapitalization and governance review, with input from the California and Delaware Attorneys General. These efforts aimed to solidify the foundation’s role in steering the ethical deployment of artificial intelligence.

The OpenAI Foundation, which holds a significant equity stake in OpenAI Group PBC, operates as a separate nonprofit. Its mission is to ensure AI benefits all of humanity, supporting initiatives in safety, civil society, and resilience through responsible AI development.
