BNB Smart Chain’s Pasteur hardfork introduces critical upgrades to bridge security, validator governance, and block processing efficiency.
BNB Smart Chain (BSC) is set to undergo a significant upgrade as the Pasteur hardfork activates on the mainnet at 02:30 AM UTC on August 25, 2026. This update brings key improvements in bridge security, validator governance, and block efficiency, marking another step in BSC’s evolution toward higher throughput and better network security.
What Pasteur Brings
The Pasteur hardfork integrates three Binance Evolution Proposals (BEPs):
- BEP-682: Strengthens bridge security by rejecting duplicate validator signatures, preventing potential exploits where a validator’s power could be overstated.
- BEP-695: Fixes governance and staking inconsistencies by ensuring validator keys retire correctly and blocking governance manipulation using blacklisted addresses.
- BEP-675: Optimizes block processing by allowing builders to propose pre-executed blocks, reducing redundancy and increasing transaction capacity. Testnet benchmarks showed throughput jumping from 1,237 to 2,324 transactions per second (TPS) without increasing gas fees or block times.
This upgrade builds on previous milestones like the Fermi and Osaka/Mendel hardforks, which focused on reducing block times to 0.45 seconds and stabilizing performance at that speed. Pasteur shifts the focus to maximizing the utility of that speed while enhancing the network’s integrity.
Impact for Developers and Users
For most developers, the upgrade promises more room in each block without requiring any immediate action. However, block builders aiming to use the BEP-675 path must transition to running full nodes, as they’ll now propose fully executed blocks. Legacy methods will remain functional for builders who need more time to adapt.
End users are unlikely to notice day-to-day changes, but the hardfork’s improvements will help during busy periods by reducing transaction delays caused by half-full blocks.
What Validators and Node Operators Should Know
Validators and node operators must upgrade to v1.7.7 before the scheduled activation time. Configuration changes, such as removing the “[Eth] EnableBAL” setting from config.toml, are required for a smooth upgrade. Several command-line flags, including –txpool.overflowpoolslots and –enablebal, are deprecated or removed in this release.
The upgrade process is relatively straightforward, involving a binary replacement and minor configuration adjustments. However, failure to update in time will result in nodes being incompatible with the network post-hardfork.
