• Stellar looks to solve a global problem through the use of Stella Aid Assist
  • Using blockchain, Stellar is helping to curb the difficulties of delivering humanitarian aid to the world.

Stellar is making strides within different sectors as it continues to stretch its platform and its use cases across different ecosystems. Very recently, Denelle Dixon, the CEO and executive director of the Stellar development foundation made a blogpost that detailed the ways in which blockchain intersects with humanitarian aid.

At Consensus 2023, Dixon spoke on the use of blockchain and Web3 for humanitarian causes, mainly through Stellar Aid Assist (SAA). Unveiled to the public in December of 2022, the Stellar Aid Assist (SAA) seeks to provide aid organizations with a first-of-its-kind blockchain solution, for the facilitation of instant and transparent digital aid.

The SDF has shown interest in pushing blockchain beyond the typical landscape, by increasing the use cases for blockchains across different fields, without forcing user adoption. The CEO stated that Stellar was looking to tackle the difficulty of driving humanitarian aid. Stellar found that it was indeed possible to enhance the cash system of aid delivery through the use of blockchain. Dixon wrote;

…yes, blockchain can help solve these and other challenges. By leveraging both MoneyGram Access, which connects digital wallets to cash-in-and-out on/off ramps in more than 180 countries, and the Stellar Disbursement Platform, which allows organizations to make bulk payments and view transaction records all in one place, SAA has successfully been used to deploy aid to recipients in Ukraine.

The Stellar Disbursement is to be made open-source

Going further, she highlighted the fact that MoneyGram Access is free and ready to use. But even more exciting are the growing plans to make the Stellar Disbursement Platform open-source. Although the CEO did not give any specific date, she mentioned that the plans will likely come to fruition towards the end of the third quarter of this year. Once that has been carried out, users of the platform can access it.

At present, community members within the Stellar ecosystem are working creatively to leverage these tools both individually and collectively, so as to bring the new use case to life. The CEO conclusively welcomed developers and entrepreneurs looking to explore on/off ramps or bulk payments to the space.

It has been an immense privilege to work with these aid organizations and learn from them how we can best provide financial access to the populations that need it most. Reflecting back on Consensus, I’m happy to say that what SDF has been saying all along is becoming a reality: when blockchain meets real-world use, it can truly change the world for the better.
