UC Santa Cruz Utilizes NVIDIA for Enhanced Coastal Flood Mapping

UC Santa Cruz is at the forefront of coastal flood mapping, utilizing NVIDIA’s advanced GPU technology to create detailed visualizations that aid in understanding flood risks. With climate change driving sea-level rise, coastal communities face a 26% chance of flooding over the next 30 years, according to NVIDIA.

Leveraging GPU Technology for Flood Risk Analysis

Michael Beck, professor and director of the UC Santa Cruz Center for Coastal Climate Resilience, is spearheading efforts to model and map the protective benefits of natural barriers like coral reefs and mangroves. This initiative, powered by NVIDIA GPU-accelerated visualizations, aims to inform and motivate government agencies, nonprofits, and financial organizations to adopt nature-based solutions for flood mitigation.

The center employs NVIDIA CUDA-X software, including the cuPyNumeric library and nvfortran compiler, running on NVIDIA RTX GPUs. This technology was acquired through the NVIDIA Academic Grant Program, significantly reducing simulation times from six hours to just 40 minutes per model.

Global Ambitions and Applications

The research team is now expanding its efforts globally, mapping flood scenarios for small-island developing states ahead of the COP30 climate change conference. The high-resolution models not only show potential weather impacts but also simulate solutions, providing a comprehensive view of possible outcomes.

In addition to global initiatives, UC Santa Cruz is focusing on local projects like CoSMoS ADAPT, which aims to enhance the USGS’s Coastal Storm Modeling System. This will allow for a quantitative evaluation of California’s coastal adaptation strategies, including nature-based solutions such as dunes and reefs.

Innovative Insurance Solutions for Coral Reefs

Insurance policies are emerging as a tool for coral reef preservation, with regions like the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef in Mexico leading the way. By visualizing the potential damage from hurricanes, stakeholders, including the Mexican government and World Bank Group, have invested in parametric insurance policies to fund reef restoration post-storms.

These policies ensure that funding is available to restore natural barriers, thus protecting coastal communities from severe flooding. As more regions adopt similar strategies, the combination of advanced modeling and innovative insurance solutions could become a standard for climate resilience.
