Brazil\u2019s exchange Mercado Bitcoin paused deposits and withdrawals after a security breach, saying customer funds and data were safe.<\/p>\n

Mercado Bitcoin, one of Brazil\u2019s largest Bitcoin exchanges, has confirmed a security incident that saw over $46 million worth of cryptocurrency drained from wallets on Monday. Despite the company\u2019s announcement that deposits and withdrawals had been suspended, addresses associated with the incident continued to receive funds for hours afterward.<\/p>\n

Security firms have stated the hack was carried out through standard transfers rather than a smart contract exploit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Senior security engineer at Certik, Dickson Wu, published<\/a> an initial post-mortem of the incident,\u00a0saying the attackers \u201cpicked at eight small chains for four hours,\u201d including Base, Optimism and Arbitrum. The attack then moved to the company\u2019s main hot wallets before transferring tiny amounts of Ether (ETH) from 27,160 different addresses. <\/p>\n
