The regulator exempted the fund from its standard risk diversification rules, citing Bitcoin’s long trading history and high trading volumes, and confirmed that other providers have already filed or announced applications, although it named neither the issuer nor a launch date.

Swiss Investors Could Already Buy Bitcoin on SIX, Just Not Through a Fund

The approval does not introduce exchange-traded Bitcoin to Switzerland. SIX Swiss Exchange has listed crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs) from issuers such as 21Shares, Bitwise, CoinShares, Fidelity, iShares and VanEck for years, and many of them are physically backed and follow the Bitcoin price closely. What changes is the legal wrapper, which determines what the investor actually owns and who carries responsibility if something goes wrong.

A Swiss crypto ETP is a debt security, so its holder relies on the issuer and on the Bitcoin pledged as collateral. The new ETF belongs to FINMA’s category of “other funds for alternative investments” with specific risk, which means investors own units in a supervised pool of assets governed by Swiss fund law.

Already on SIX

Bitcoin ETP

Legal formDebt security issued by the provider

Bitcoin linkBacked by pledged Bitcoin collateral

Key riskIssuer and collateral risk

StatusTrading for years

Approved October 20, 2026

Bitcoin ETF

Legal formUnits in a Swiss investment fund

Bitcoin linkFund holds Bitcoin directly

Key riskCustody, operational and market risk

StatusLaunch date not announced

FINMA Waived Its Own Risk-Spreading Rule Because of Bitcoin’s Liquidity

Swiss fund law expects a fund to spread its holdings so that a single asset cannot wipe out the portfolio, a principle that a fund built to track one asset contradicts by design. Requiring diversification would have turned the ETF into a different product, so FINMA granted an exemption tied to two characteristics of Bitcoin: a trading record longer than that of almost any other crypto asset, and volumes far above those of its peers. Liquidity carries weight here because a fund must be able to sell holdings to meet redemptions without pushing the price against its own investors.

The waiver covers this fund only. FINMA did not announce a general exemption for single-asset crypto funds, and it stressed that Bitcoin remains highly risky even inside an approved ETF, with volatility capable of causing substantial losses for investors who allocate too much.

The Fund’s Bitcoin Must Stay Out of a Failed Custodian’s Bankruptcy Estate

The approval relies on guidance FINMA published on January 12, 2026 on the custody of crypto-based assets. Its central requirement is that client assets remain outside a custodian’s bankruptcy estate, so that creditors of a collapsed custodian have no claim on Bitcoin belonging to the fund and its unitholders. Direct crypto investments held by Swiss collective investment schemes generally have to sit with a Swiss depositary bank, and where custody is delegated abroad, the foreign legal system must offer bankruptcy protection equivalent to Swiss law.

Distribution falls under the Swiss Financial Services Act (FinSA), the law that governs how financial products are sold and recommended to clients, which brings suitability checks and obliges the provider to explain risks clearly in the fund documents. These rules target mis-selling and weak custody, while doing nothing to shield investors from a falling Bitcoin price.

Matrixport’s 2024 Swiss Acquisition Puts BIT Asset Management in the Frame

FINMA kept the issuer’s name to itself, and media reports have since pointed to BIT Asset Management, formerly Matrixport Asset Management, as the likely provider, although neither the regulator nor the company has confirmed the connection.

The trail leads back to September 30, 2024, when Matrixport completed an all-cash acquisition of Crypto Finance (Asset Management) AG from the Deutsche Börse-owned Crypto Finance Group. That unit managed the first crypto fund FINMA ever approved, the Crypto Market Index Fund authorized in 2021 for qualified investors, which gave its new owner both a Swiss license and direct experience of the regulator’s fund approval process.

From index fund to retail Bitcoin ETF

September 2021

FINMA approves the Crypto Market Index Fund, a diversified crypto basket for qualified investors only

January 2024

The US SEC approves spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products

September 2024

Matrixport buys the Swiss asset manager behind the 2021 fund

January 12, 2026

FINMA publishes crypto custody guidance with bankruptcy protection requirements

October 20, 2026

FINMA approves the first Swiss spot Bitcoin ETF for retail investors

Fees and Bank Distribution Will Decide Whether Money Moves From ETPs

Banks and wealth managers often work under internal rules that favor supervised funds over structured notes, which could give the Swiss Bitcoin ETF access to clients that ETPs reach less easily, although each institution will apply its own product policies. FINMA’s confirmation of further applications also points to competition on management fees and custody terms, a pressure that existing ETP issuers will feel as well.

The effect on Bitcoin demand is harder to estimate. A fund that attracts net inflows has to buy Bitcoin to back new units, yet no assets, volumes or inflows exist so far, and part of the money may simply migrate from existing Swiss ETPs rather than arrive as new capital. In the United States, where spot products were approved in January 2024, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) became the largest product in its category, a scale that the much smaller and already well-served Swiss market is unlikely to approach.

Prospectus and SIX Listing Notice Will Reveal the Swiss Bitcoin ETF’s Missing Terms

The ticker, ISIN code, management fee, custodian, seed capital and first trading day all remain undisclosed. Before units can be offered to the public, the provider has to publish a prospectus and a key information document naming the fund management company, the custodian and the fee structure, and an exchange listing notice will fix the trading date. Those documents will also show whether the Bitcoin sits with a Swiss depositary bank or a foreign sub-custodian, a choice that determines how much additional legal work the fund needs to satisfy FINMA’s bankruptcy protection standard.

Source

All news is rigorously fact-checked and reviewed by leading blockchain experts and seasoned industry insiders.
