It is also working with Ripple and LMAX Group on an arrangement that would allow eligible RLUSD balances to support trading while remaining in bank custody.

The custody service is operational through Standard Chartered’s Dubai International Financial Centre branch, regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority.

The proposed collateral service is a separate development. It would apply an existing bank model to a stablecoin that Ripple is positioning for institutional payments, settlement and trading.

Standard Chartered Already Has a Collateral-Mirroring Business

The October agreement builds on infrastructure that predates RLUSD’s addition.

In April 2025, Standard Chartered and OKX launched a collateral-mirroring pilot in Dubai. It allowed participating institutions to use cryptocurrencies and tokenized money market funds as off-exchange collateral, with Standard Chartered acting as the independent custodian.

The bank expanded that approach in April 2026 through a framework involving OKX and BlackRock, enabling eligible clients to use BlackRock’s tokenized Treasury fund, BUIDL, as collateral for trading.

The LMAX relationship was already developing along a parallel track.

Standard Chartered and LMAX completed live digital asset prime brokerage transactions in July. In September, LMAX appointed the bank as a digital asset custodian through its DIFC branch and Luxembourg subsidiary.

The latest RLUSD announcement therefore connects an additional dollar-denominated token to a network of existing custody and trading relationships.

It does not represent the first deployment of collateral mirroring by Standard Chartered.

The Difference Between Holding RLUSD and Deploying It

Institutional custody and trading collateral serve different purposes.

Custody provides an arrangement for safeguarding assets, managing access and maintaining operational controls.

Collateral allows those assets to support trading positions or other financial obligations.

Under a conventional prefunded model, a trading firm may transfer assets to a venue before opening positions. That can create exposure to the venue’s custody and operational arrangements.

Standard Chartered’s proposed model would instead allow LMAX to recognize the value of eligible RLUSD held at the bank.

The tokens would not need to move directly to the trading platform merely to establish the corresponding collateral value.

The precise legal treatment, eligibility rules and procedures for enforcing collateral have not yet been disclosed. Keeping assets off-exchange can reduce certain transfer and custody risks, but it does not eliminate exposure arising from trading, settlement or contractual arrangements.

Institutional infrastructure

Three stages of off-exchange collateral

How Standard Chartered’s existing model is expanding to RLUSD.

01
OKX collateral mirroring

PILOT LAUNCHED

STARTED

April 2025

FUNCTION

Cryptocurrency and tokenized fund collateral held off-exchange with the bank.

02
RLUSD bank custody

LIVE

STARTED

October 2026

FUNCTION

Eligible institutions can hold XRP Ledger-issued RLUSD through Standard Chartered’s DIFC custody service.

03
RLUSD collateral at LMAX

PLANNED

TIMING

Not announced

INTENDED FUNCTION

Eligible RLUSD remains at the bank while its collateral value is recognized for agreed LMAX trading products.

Source: Standard Chartered announcements, April 2025 and October 2026. Planned functionality remains subject to testing, documentation and approvals.

Ripple’s LMAX Partnership Gains a Banking Component

Ripple and LMAX announced their broader relationship in January 2026.

The multiyear agreement identified RLUSD as a potential collateral and settlement asset across LMAX’s institutional marketplace, including spot cryptocurrency trading, perpetual futures and contracts for difference.

Ripple also agreed to provide $150 million in financing to support LMAX’s long-term growth strategy.

Adding Standard Chartered introduces an independent banking custodian into that commercial arrangement.

An institution could potentially maintain RLUSD with the bank while accessing agreed LMAX products through a separate trading relationship.

For a fund operating across several markets, that separation may simplify collateral administration and reduce the need to move assets between platforms.

The economics will depend on the collateral value LMAX recognizes, any applicable haircuts, fees and the speed at which positions can be funded or collateral returned.

Those details will be more informative than the announcement of custody support alone.

RLUSD’s Reserve Custodian Is Not Changing

Ripple’s transparency dashboard reported approximately $2.46 billion in circulating RLUSD and $2.60 billion in reserve funds as of October 8.

These figures cover the stablecoin’s aggregate circulation and reserves, not the amount held on the XRP Ledger or deposited with Standard Chartered.

The distinction between reserve custody and token custody is also important.

Ripple selected BNY in July 2025 as the primary custodian of the assets backing RLUSD. Those reserves support the stablecoin’s dollar redemption framework.

Standard Chartered’s new service concerns RLUSD tokens held on behalf of institutional customers.

The two banks therefore perform different functions within the stablecoin’s financial structure.

RLUSD is issued by Ripple’s regulated entities, including Standard Custody & Trust Company, under the supervision of the New York State Department of Financial Services.

Its reserve arrangements and redemption rights are separate from the contractual terms governing any future use of RLUSD as trading collateral.

Does the XRP Ledger Benefit From Institutional Custody?

The launch adds another institutional use case for the XRP Ledger, but it should not be interpreted as an automatic source of substantial XRP buying.

RLUSD is a dollar-pegged token, while XRP is the network’s native asset.

Transactions involving RLUSD on the XRP Ledger use the network’s infrastructure, including XRP-denominated transaction fees and account reserve requirements.

Those requirements are distinct from the dollar value of RLUSD held in custody.

A $100 million RLUSD custody balance, for example, would not imply that Standard Chartered or its customers must purchase $100 million in XRP.

Nor has the bank disclosed an RLUSD custody balance or projected transaction volumes.

The more direct commercial opportunity concerns RLUSD’s acceptance within institutional trading workflows.

The Next Test Is Collateral Usage, Not Token Listings

Standard Chartered has already demonstrated that bank-held digital assets can be incorporated into off-exchange collateral arrangements.

The question now is whether RLUSD can become an actively used funding asset within LMAX’s institutional marketplace.

The planned integration remains subject to final documentation, testing, regulatory requirements and internal approvals. No implementation date has been confirmed.

Once operational, the relevant indicators will include eligible collateral balances, participating institutions, applicable margin terms and trading activity supported by RLUSD.

A larger stablecoin supply may indicate broader adoption, but it cannot establish how much of that supply is being used productively in institutional markets.

Standard Chartered’s October announcement advances the custody side of the arrangement. Its greater financial significance will emerge only if bank-held RLUSD begins supporting measurable trading activity without requiring the underlying tokens to leave the custodian.

Source

All news is rigorously fact-checked and reviewed by leading blockchain experts and seasoned industry insiders.
