BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda said the experiments will examine links between blockchain systems and Japan\u2019s existing settlement infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The Bank of Japan will conduct technical experiments using blockchain technology to settle deposits held at the central bank by financial institutions, according to BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a speech posted Tuesday titled \u201cThe New Financial Ecosystem and the Role of Central Banks,\u201d Ueda said<\/a> a sandbox project is underway to test settlement using central bank money \u201cin the form of current account deposits on a system that uses blockchains.\u201d<\/p>\n

The experiments will explore \u201cmethods of connection with the existing system\u201d and examine use cases, including \u201cdomestic interbank settlement and securities settlement.\u201d<\/p>\n
