Michael Selig said that the US financial regulator had filed an amicus brief against what he called an \u201conslaught of state-led litigation\u201d against prediction markets.<\/p>\n

Michael Selig, who chairs the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission under President Donald Trump, announced the agency would be responding to what he called an \u201conslaught of state-led litigation\u201d against prediction market platforms.<\/p>\n

In a video posted to X on Tuesday, Selig said<\/a> that the CFTC had filed an amicus brief \u2014 also known as a \u201cfriend of the court\u201d brief \u2014 to \u201cdefend its exclusive jurisdiction\u201d in regulating prediction markets, which he equated to derivative markets. The chair warned that any state-level entities challenging the CFTC\u2019s authority over such markets would be met in court.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrediction markets aren\u2019t new \u2014 the CFTC has regulated these markets for over two decades,\u201d said Selig. \u201cThey provide useful functions for society by allowing everyday Americans to hedge commercial risks […] they also serve as an important check on our news media and our information streams.\u201d<\/p>\n
