The firm, which manages the former Binance CEO\u2019s personal wealth and funds from a small group of early Binance executives, including co-founder Yi He, is exploring the possibility of converting into an external fund in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The $10 billion investment vehicle focuses primarily on crypto startups but also backs ventures in biotech and artificial intelligence. While YZi Labs briefly accepted about $300 million from external investors in 2022 before returning a portion of the capital, the firm is now seeing steady interest from new backers.<\/p>\n<p>Zhang stated that while opening to outside capital is a \u201chuge responsibility,\u201d the near-term focus remains on hiring and expanding the firm\u2019s expertise, particularly in the AI and biotech sectors. She emphasized that the 12-person team takes a \u201csuper long-term\u201d view on investments, free from the pressure of annual return targets.<\/p>\n<p>The potential move to admit external capital, especially from the United States, would come with increased regulatory scrutiny. However, Zhang noted that the current U.S. regulatory environment appears to be shifting, with some officials and regulators showing a more \u201copen-minded\u201d approach toward digital assets. She pointed to a recent request from the SEC for a private showcase of YZi-backed projects, a sign of renewed interest in the space.<\/p>\n<p>Zhao, who stepped down as CEO of Binance and served a prison sentence last year after pleading guilty to U.S. criminal charges, remains a prominent figure in the crypto industry. The firm he founded, Binance, paid over $4.3 billion in penalties for money-laundering and sanctions violations.
